At least two suspected bandit leaders and a drug dealer were killed in separate reported gunfights in three districts.

Seven members of police and RAB have also been injured in the incidents that took place on Tuesday.

In Bagerhat, a suspected bandit leader has been killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion-6 in Sundarban’s Chandpai Range.

The incident took place on Tuesday when a team of RAB-6 made a drive to the Kodalia Khal area, being informed that a group of bandits were preparing to attack some local fishermen for money, RAB sources said.

A team of RAB took position around their headquarters around 8am on Tuesday, said  Company Commander Lt Col Rowshanul Firoz of RAB-6, Khulna.

“Sensing our presence, the bandits, however, started firing at us, and when we retaliated, they fled the spot,” said the official.

The bullet-riddled body of Faruq Morol, leader of the infamous bandit group “Faruq Bahini” was found after the half an hour-long shoot-out, and he died while undergoing treatment at the Mongla Upazila Hospital, Commander Firoz added.

RAB also recovered local firearms and weapons which had been used for robbery by the group.

In Pabna, another bandit leader has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Santhia area early morning Tuesday.

The deceased, Sarowar alias Saro, Shahin Alam, or Ashik, 36, was a ring leader of an inter-district robber gang and accused in a murder case, police sources said.

“We were informed by our sources that a secret meeting is going to be held by the robbers in Shamukjani Market area,” said Additional Superintendent of Police Gautam Kumar Biswas.

“Later on, we along with Pabna Detective Branch made a joint drive to the meeting spot around 2am Tuesday, and sensing our presence the robbers started firing at us.

“When we fired in retaliation, they stepped back and we found the bullet-hit body of Sarowar who later died at the Pabna General Hospital while undergoing treatment,” the official added.

Local ammunition was recovered and two members of the police were also injured in the shoot out.

In Dinajpur, a suspected drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Birampur upazila in Mirpur area under Birampur municipality early Tuesday.

The identity of the deceased man, aged 33, could not be confirmed immediately and three police personnel were injured in the gunfight, police claimed.

Birampur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said: "Acting on a tip-off that a group of drug dealers is bringing a consignment of phensedyl to Bangladesh from India, a team of police led by me conducted a drive in the Mirpur area around 2:30am.

"Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the drug peddlers opened fire on police, prompting the police to retaliate in self-defence, that triggered a gunfight," he said.

Police fired blanks and at one stage the drug dealers retreated from the spot, he continued.

After searching the spot, the law enforcers found one of the drug peddlers with bullet wounds.

He was taken to Birampur Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty physician declared him dead, the OC said.

Three police members -- Assistant Sub-Inspectors Shahjahan and Niranjan, and Constable Delwar -- got injured in the gunfight and they were sent to Police Lines Hospital in Dinajpur, he said.

Police recovered 100 bottles of phensedyl, a locally made gun, three bullets, and sharp weapons from the spot.

A case will be filed in this connection, the OC added.
