One killed as police fires rubber bullets on jute mill workers in Dinajpur

Police fired tear shells and rubber bullets to disperse the workers

At least one person was killed and 10 others injured after police fired rubber bullets and teargas to disperse agitated workers of Rupali Jute Mills at Birol upazila of Dinajpur.

The incident took place on Wednesday night.

Locals said, agitated workers started gathering in front of the mill office for due wages after its management did not announce the mill closed in the current situation.

The mill’s Managing Director M Abdul Latif tried to negotiate with the workers and calm them down. However, at one point, the agitated workers turned violent and started vandalizing the mill.

Later, police fired tear shells and rubber bullets to disperse the workers.

During the police action, one worker, identified as Surat Ali, was killed while 10 others were injured.

The injured workers were taken to Birol Health Complex for treatment.

Borol Health Complex Thana Health Officer (THO) Dr Md Abdul Mokaddes confirmed Dhaka Tribune that the victim died after being hit by rubber bullets.

 At the same time, Birol police station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Nasim Habib also confirmed the matter.

The body of the deceased has been kept at the mortuary of M Abdur Rahim Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
