The situation arose as two USA returnees tested positive for coronavirus and attended a program that could infect hundreds
Gaibandha’s Sadullapur upazila administration suggested locking down the entire locality after two US returnees –who were tested positive for the coronavirus–attended a program consisting of over 500 people.
However, Gaibandha District Administration did not authorize the lockdown proposal by the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) on Sunday and said the situation does not need such extreme measures.
The situation emerged as a mother-son duo –who were later tested positive for the covid-19 virus– attended a wedding ceremony consisting at least 500 people on March 13, despite being prescribed to be in quarantine.
Not only that, the people who came into contact with the coronavirus infected duo at the wedding, went to vote at the Gaibandha-3 by-polls occurring on March 21. Then they also went to markets and other social events, which might have affected thousands, locals say.
In light of the event, panic broke out amid locals that they too might have become infected by the two and people who came into contact with them.
“In response to the situation, Upazila Coronavirus Prevention and Control Committee sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) prescribing urgent lock-down of the area,” said UNO Md Nabinewaj.
However, quoting the suggested measures to be unnecessary, Gaibandha DC and President of the District Coronavirus Prevention and Control Committee Md Abdul Matin said: “After evaluating the situation, we did not approve of the lock-down as not enough reasons were found to be alarmed.”
SM Abu Hanif, Gaibandha civil surgeon and also a member of the committee, said they are still evaluating the situation carefully, and discussions are on-going to take further measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
