Journalist Ariful was granted bail on Sunday
Dhaka Tribune journalist Ariful Islam has been subjected to torture, a physician at Kurigram General Hospital has said.
"He bore injury marks on his body," Orthopaedic Senior Consultant Uttam Kumar Roy said on Sunday.
"He underwent medical tests and after getting the reports, we will be able to inform you about his overall condition," he added.
Earlier in the day, Ariful, Kurigram district correspondent for Dhaka Tribune and Bangla Tribune, was granted bail by Additional District Magistrate Sujauddowla.
After getting bail, the journalist was taken to Kurigram General Hospital directly from the district jail.
On March 14, the journalist was sent to jail soon after a mobile court, set up at the office of the Kurigram deputy commissioner (DC), ended the trial proceedings.
The mobile court jailed the journalist for a year, after law enforcement members led by magistrates picked him up from his home in Kurigram town in the dead of the night .
The mobile court brought an allegation against the journalist that drugs and alcohol were recovered from his possession, which his family termed absurd.
At the hospital, Ariful said he was beaten at his house before he was picked up.
He was stripped and tortured blindfolded during the time he was kept at the DC office, he added.
