Road crashes kill 4 across the country

Teacher of Willes Little Flower School and College loses hand in Gopalganj accident

At least four people were killed and 16 others injured in separate road accidents around the country yesterday and on Monday night.

In Gopalganj, at least 14 students and a teacher of Willes Little Flower School and College were injured when the bus carrying them crashed into a truck on Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Sadar upazila's Pathaila area around 1pm on Tuesday.

Among the injured, teacher Syed Fahima Begum's, 50, left hand was severed from her body during the collision, confirmed Sadar police station OC Md Monirul Islam, reports our correspondent Manoj Saha.

She and nine other injured were rushed to Gopalganj 250 Bed General Hospital. From there, Fahima was airlifted to Dhaka.

Later, she underwent a surgery, aimed to reattach her hand, at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, reports our correspondent Aminul Islam Babu.

One of the injured students, Fahad Arefin, said some 125 students, teachers, and school employees started from Dhaka for Gopalganj’s Tungipara in an educational trip on six minibuses in the morning.

"There were 31 of us on our bus including Fahima madam. Our bus tried to steer away from a speeding car coming from the opposite direction and crashed into the truck," he added.

In Sirajganj, two motorcycle riders were killed when a bus ran over them on Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway in Kamarkhand upazila's Mofiz Mor area, on the west side of the Bangabandhu Bridge, around 4:45am Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Miraz Uddin, 22, and his cousin, Hasinur Rahman, 25, confirmed Bangabandhu Bridge (west) police station OC Syed Sahid Alam, reports our correspondent Aminul Islam Rana.

The OC said Miraz and Hasinur were going to Dinajpur when the bus ran over them and killed both on the spot.

In Pirojpur, a motorcyclist was killed and his passenger severely injured when a speeding BRTC bus hit them on the Pirojpur-Mathbaria-Pathorghata Road in Mathbaria's Bandhabpara area in the afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Nazim Haoladar, 22, and the injured Saidul, 26, said Mathbaria Upazila Health Complex Resident Medical Officer Dr Ferdous Islam.

He said Nazim was killed on the spot after suffering a severe blow to his head, reports our correspondent Arif Mostafa.

In Jhenaidah, a bicyclist died after being hit by a motorcycle in front of the sugar mill at Bolidapara of Kaliganj upazila around 8:30pm on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Mintu Ullah, 40, confirmed Kaliganj police station OC Md Mahfuzur Rahman Miah, reports our correspondent Nayan Khondoker.

After the crash, locals took him to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, from where he was referred to Dhaka after his condition worsened. Mintu died around 10pm on the way to Dhaka.

Bus driver arrested over Bijoynagar crash

Meanwhile, police on Tuesday morning arrested the Limon Paribahan bus driver accused in a case filed over the death of six people in a road accident at Brahmanbaria's Bijoynagar upazila.

The man, identified as Masud Rana, 35, was arrested from Dhaka's Jatrabari area, reports our correspondent Ujjal Chakrabarty quoting police.

Khatihata highway police station OC Moinul Islam said the bus Masud was driving had collided with a microbus on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Bijoynagar's Rampur area early Friday. The collision set the microbus on fire and killed six people.

Khatihata highway police Sub-Inspector Premdhon Majumder later filed the case accusing the driver and owner of the bus.
