The trio demanded Tk 20,000 to celebrate 'Mujib Borsho' in style
Police on Friday arrested three people for demanding money from an architect so they could “celebrate Mujib Borsho in a befitting manner” from Nandan Kanan in Chittagong city.
The arrestees were identified as Sheikh Reaz Ahmmed, 40, Shahjahan, 45, and Batul Barua, 38, said Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mohsin.
Mohsin said: "On March 2, the trio demanded Tk20,000 from architect Pranata Mitra as expenses to celebrate 'Mujib Borsho'. When he refused, the extortionists verbally abused him and threatened to shut his enterprise."
"Later on March 6, when they went to the architect’s office at Nandan Kanan area in the city and demanded the money, Pranata informed the police. Police later conducted a drive and arrested them" he continued.
He also said a case was filed with the Kotwali police station charging the trio with extortion on Friday and they have been produced before court on Saturday.
Earlier, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader vowed to take stern action against those who would be involved with extortion and other illegal activities in the name of 'Mujib Year' celebration.
