1 killed in reported gunfight in Kushtia

A member of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) was killed in an alleged gunfight with armed forces early on Wednesday.

The incident took place at Bandukbhanga union in Rangamati sadar upazila.

The deceased was identified as Arpan Chakma alias Babudhon Chakma, 31, also an accused in the 2018 murder of Naniarchar upazila chairman Shaktiman Chakma.

According to a press statement issued by the Inter Service Public Relation Directorate, Arpan was killed in a gunfight between a group of armed criminals and an army patrol team.

The UPDF, however, claims that Arpan was killed in a premeditated way.

According to the ISPR statement, a group of armed criminals opened fire at a patrol team from Shuvolong camp in Banaschhari early Wednesday, prompting the armed forces to fire back in self-defence.

As the team commander informed Shuvolong camp about the attack, another patrol team joined them. The gunfight continued for 15-20 minutes compelling the criminals to retreat.

The patrol team recovered a body which was later identified by locals as Arpan Chakma.

A foreign pistol, local firearms, several bullets, one cartridge and other equipment were also recovered from the scene, ISPR said.

The statement further said Arpan along with his associates used to extort money from locals in Banaschhari, according to sources.

Rangamati Kotwali police station Sub-Inspector Al Amin said Arpan’s body had been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.

The UPDF issued a statement yesterday protesting Arpan Chakma’s death.

In the statement, UPDF’s Rangamati district organizer, Sochol Chakma, said Arpan’s death was a planned execution carried out by the armed forces.

Man killed in ‘gunfight’ in Kushtia

A suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Bagoan village in Daulatpur upazila, Kushtia early on Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as Shahidul Islam alias Shahid, 34, was from Jamalpur and wanted in 14 cases, said police.

However, Shahid's family says police arrested him a day before and executed him under the pretence of a gunfight.

Daulatpur police station OC SM Arifur Rahman said: “Acting on a tip off, we conducted a drive to arrest drug dealers in Bagoan village around 3am. Criminals opened fire as soon as police reached the spot, triggering a gunfight. Shahid was shot.

“We took him to a local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead,” added Arifur.

Shahid's cousin Md Roni Ahmed, who works at Munshiganj Delta Pharma, said: "Shahid was at a tea-stall near Jamalpur Primary School when a group of policemen in plain clothes forced him into a white microbus around 5pm on Tuesday. They also arrested Shahid's father and nephew, who are still in police custody."

Roni confirmed that Shahid was indeed a drug dealer and was out on bail in all the cases against him. However, recently warrants were issued against him in three cases.
