Earlier a banner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), with similar mistakes, drew flak

A banner of the history department of Rajshahi University (RU) at the probhat ferry (morning procession) remembering the language martyrs of 1952 went viral on social media on Monday.

Netizens predictably lashed out as the banner depicted the images of the seven Bir Shreshthas – war heroes of the 1971 Liberation War – instead of the language martyrs of 1952.

The banner was titled “Amar Ekushey February.” However, there were photos of the seven Bir Shreshthas on the banner. And above the images were the words, “Our sincere respect for the language martyrs on International Mother Language Day.”

According to sources in the history department, the department’s chairman Professor Mortuza Khaled, Prof Chittaranjan Misra, Assistant Prof Golam Sarwar, along with a few other teachers and around a hundred students of the department joined the procession behind the banner.

While contacted, Prof Mortuza Khaled, said: “Has that really happened? I had told some students to make the banner for the program.”

Earlier, a banner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) had made a similar mistake, drawing widespread criticism.

Bangla Academy Sahitya Puroshkar (Literary Award) holder Shorochish Sarkar, who is also a researcher in Bangla language said: “These mistakes can occur due to not knowing, being careless or inexperienced. But it is unfortunate that these mistakes are coming from those who discuss our liberation war and history.”
