2 killed in Sylhet ‘gunfights’

A suspected robber and an alleged arms dealer have been killed in separate gunfights in Bishwanath and Golapganj upazilas of Sylhet. 

The suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Surirkhal in Bishwanath upazila early Saturday. 

The identity of the deceased could not be known yet. 

Bishwanath police station Officer-in-Charge Shamim Musa said: "On a tip off, police conducted a raid in the area around 3:30am. 

Realizing police presence, the robber gang opened fire, triggering a gunfight. One of the robbers was killed in the skirmish while others managed to flee," the OC said. 

He further stated three policemen were injured in the gunfight. Police also recovered a pipe gun and three rounds of bullets from the spot. 

Meanwhile, a suspected arms dealer was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Kadurpur village in Golapganj early Saturday. 

The deceased was identified Ali Hossain, 40, resident of the area. He was wanted in several criminal cases including murder. 

Rab-9 Additional Superintendent of Police(ASP) Moniruzzaman said: "Ali and his associates opened fire when the elite force was conducting a raid in the area around 12:30am, forcing us to fire back. "

Ali was killed on the spot, the official added.
