2 suspected robbers killed in Comilla 'gunfight'

Police said the duo had seven to eight cases filed against them

Two suspected robbers have been killed in a reported gunfight with police near the Palpari Bridge area under Adarsha Sadar upazila of Comilla district. 

The incident occurred around 2:30am on Friday.

The deceased are Md Emon, 40, son of Akhtaruzzaman from Bhatpara area, and Mohammad Jahangir, 28, son of late Miru Mia from Araiora area of the same upazila.

Police claimed the deceased robbers had seven to eight cases filed against them, including robbery, murder, arms, and extortion cases.

Comilla Detective Branch (DB) of Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Porimol Chandra Das said: "Acting on a tip-off, we along with members of Kotwali police station went to the Palpari Bridge area. 

 "As we reached the spot the robbers opened fire on us, forcing us to fire back in self defence."

The SI said three policemen -- Kotwali police station SI Shaheen, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Johrul, and DB Police Constable Mollah Abdus Sobur -- along with the two robbers got injured during the gunfight.

The five injured were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared the robber duo dead. The policemen were released after primary treatment.

A firearm, five rounds of bullet shells, two machetes, a knife, and a wire cutter were recovered from the spot.
