Among the educational institutions that do have Shaheed Minar, the conditions of some are dilapidated
Most educational institutions in Jessore and Meherpur districts do not have Shaheed Minar, depriving the students from paying respect to the Language Movement martyrs.
Among the educational institutions that do have Shaheed Minar, the conditions of some are dilapidated.
According to Meherpur District Education Office, there are 645 educational institutions. But of them, only 49 educational institutions—14 in Sadar upazila, 14 in Mujibnagar upazila, and 21 in Gangni upazila—have Shaheed Minar, reports our Meherpur correspondent Ashraful Islam.
Meherpur District Primary Education Officer Fazleh Rahman said it was shocking that only four schools have Shaheed Minar out of 308 primary schools in the district. “It is essential that the construction of Shaheed Minar is included into school building projects.”
Meherpur Deputy Commissioner Ataul Gani said: “It is unfortunate that most educational institutions in the district do not have Shaheed Minar. I hope these schools will build Shaheed Minars before February 21 next year.”
According to Jessore District Education Office, there are 1,900 educational institutions. But of these, 650 educational institutions—77 in Sadar upazila, 55 in Bagherpara upazila, 86 in Abhaynagar, 84 in Jhikargacha, 50 in Chaugachha, 138 in Manirampur, 61 in Sharsha and 80 in Keshabpur—lack Shaheed Minar, reports UNB.
Students at some of these institutions build makeshift Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to the bravehearts who laid down their lives to secure the Bangalis’ right to speak their mother tongue in 1952.
“We can’t pay respect to the Language Movement martyrs on February 21 since there’s no Shaheed Minar at our school,” said Sumaiya Akter, a student of Dattapara Government Primary School in the Sadar upazila.
Abdul Jabbar, the school’s headmaster, said it was true that they did not have a Shaheed Minar. “Having one is necessary,” he said. “We’re taking initiative to build one.”
Jabbar said they could not construct a Shaheed Minar as they did not get any fund from the government.
Sadar Upazila Education Officer Kamruzzaman Jahangir said 77 educational institutions in the Sadar upazila lack Shaheed Minar. “We’ve prepared a list of these institutions and sent it to the district education officer,” he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (education and ICT) Shammi Islam said many schools could not construct Shaheed Minar for the lack of space.
“Teachers and students from schools lacking Shaheed Minar pay respect at Shaheed Minar of nearby educational institutions,” she said. “We’ll take necessary steps to have Shaheed Minar constructed at all educational institutions.”
