'We are investigating the matter'
A case has been filed against six people, including a Jamaat-e-Islami nayeb-e-ameer, on charges of vandalizing photos of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Chittagong.
The case was filed by Additional Public Prosecutor of Chittagong Judges Court Kamal Uddin, who is also the assistant secretary for law affairs of Chittagong district south unit of Awami League, with Sitakunda police station on Monday.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Firoz Hossain Molla, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda police station, said it was filed as a sedition case, adding, "We are investigating the matter."
The accused are former lawmaker ANM Shamsul Islam, chairman of Trustee Board of International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) and a nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat; Ahsan Ullah, a Jamaat leader and IIUC Trustee Board member; Kawsar Ahmed, former proctor of the university and a Jamaat leader; Nizam Uddin, former assistant proctor of the university; and Shafiul Alam, an official of the university.
According to the case statement, on January 29, a total of 70 Islami Chhatra Shibir members, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, backed by the aforementioned six accused, went on a rampage and vandalized the photos of Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina at the Chhatra League office in the university premises.
