Rohingya among 2 killed in Cox's Bazar, Comilla 'gunfights'

Eight members of law enforcement agencies were injured in the incidents

Two suspected robbers, including a Rohingya, have been killed in reported gunfights in Comilla and Cox's Bazar districts.

Both the incidents occurred early Monday.

In Cox's Bazar, a suspected Rohingya robber was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in West Leda Nurali Para area under Hnila union of Teknaf upazila around 4:30am.

The deceased is Nurul Amin, 30, son of late Moktul Hossain from the same area.

RAB 15 Teknaf camp Company Commander Lt Mirza Shahed Mahtab said: "Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive in the area. Sensing our presence, the robbers opened fire on us, triggering a gunfight.

"Nurul sustained bullet injuries and was taken to Teknaf Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead."

The body has been sent to Cox's Bazar General Hospital morgue for autopsy and a case has been filed with Teknaf police station, he added.

RAB Lance Naik Azharul Islam and soldier Md Sohel were injured in the incident.

RAB also recovered two firearms, four cartridges and eleven Burmese SIM cards from the spot.

In Comilla, a suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in an area near the Comilla-Sylhet Highway in Burichang upazila.

The deceased was identified as Mazharul Islam, 25, son of late Moin Uddin, a resident of Mashikara village in Debidwar upazila. He was accused in several robbery cases.

Burichong police station Officer-in-Charge Md Mozammel Haque said they had been tipped off about a robbery bid. A team of police led by him and Detective Branch Inspector Ikhtiar Uddin conducted the drive in the Paschimosing area around 3am.

“The robbers opened fire as soon as we approached the area, triggering a gunfight,” the OC said. “Mazharul was caught in the line of fire and sustained gunshot wounds.”

Later, the injured was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, Haque said.

He said six policemen were also injured in the clash.

A foreign-made pistol and sharp weapons were recovered from the site.
