Suspected Rohingya robber killed in Cox's Bazar 'gunfight'

RAB recovered two firearms and four live cartridges from the spot

A suspected Rohingya robber has been killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar district.

The incident occurred near Jadimora Rohingya camp in Nayapara area of the upazila around 4am on Tuesday.

The deceased - Ilias, 40, was a resident of Rohingya camp number 26 in Teknaf.

Three RAB officials have also been injured in the incident, Teknaf RAB 15 Company Commander Mirza Shahed Mahtab told Dhaka Tribune.

He said: "Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team conducted a drive at the Jadimora camp. As soon as they arrived, members of Jokir Group, a notorious local Rohingya robbery gang, exchanged shots with RAB officials, triggering a gunfight."

According to the RAB official, around 12 people were injured in the incident. However, most of the robbers managed to flee the area. 

Later, the elite force found the bullet-riddled body of Ilias and took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctors declared him dead.

He said a case have been filed with Teknaf police station in this regard. The body has been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
