'They were suspended based on a complaint'

Seven members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police have been suspended for allegedly extorting Tk4.5 lakh from a businessman after threatening to kill him in a crossfire.

"They were suspended based on a complaint. We are investigating the matter," Dhaka district Superintendent of Police (SP) Maruf Hossain Sarder said yesterday.

The suspended police personnel includes a sub-inspector (SI), an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), and five constables, he said.

According to sources at the police headquarters, the suspended detectives apprehended the businessman from Sutrapur area on Wednesday, and demanded the money while intimidating to kill him in a crossfire.

He, however, was released after his family gave them the money, they added.

Victim's statement

Md Shohel, a resident of Nazirabag Hashem Mia area in South Keraniganj, said that he was returning home from Dhaka's Sadarghat around 6:30pm on January 29.

Suddenly, five to six individuals surrounded me when I reached Lalkuti Ghat under the Sutrapur police station area, he added.

They identified themselves as police officials and took me to a boat after handcuffing me, he said.

According to Sohel, he was then taken into a white microbus, which was missing a vehicle registration number, from near the Alam Market of Keraniganj.

At one point, the individuals claiming to be police detectives, demanded Tk500,000 and threatened Sohel of "killing him in a crossfire" or imprisoning him with false cases, stated the complaint filed by the victim.

The same day, around 11:30pm, family members of Sohel paid TK450,000 as ransom to the detectives, they again threatened that his whole family will be killed or jailed under false cases if they tell anyone about what happened, the complaint added.
