SSC examinee shot dead in Gopalganj clash

A Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee was shot dead and ten others were injured during a clash between two groups of villagers at Bangram Maddhyopara village of Sadar upazila, Gopalganj on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Rony Hawlader, 15, a student of Balakair Azharia High School and son of Anwar Hawladar of the village.

A clash ensued between followers of former Upazila Parishad (UP) member Azizur Sheikh and local influential Notun Mollah's group at the area around 9am following a dispute in front of a shop, said Manirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station,

At one point, Azizur Sheikh, the former UP member of Karpara Union Parishad, opened fire twice and one of the bullets hit Rony, who was returning home from a tuition class, killing him on the spot, the OC added.

The injured were taken to Gopalganj General Hospital for treatment while Rony’s body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

"Additional police have been deployed in the area to bring the situation under control, and we are making drives to arrest the perpetrators," said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Sanowar Hossain.

Family sources of the suspect Azizur Sheikh said he has been on the run since the incident.

Father of the deceased, Anwar Hawladar, demanded justice for his son and said: "My son was innocent and yet killed in their clash for establishing supremacy in the area. I want proper punishment to be ensured."
