Suspected robber killed in Noakhali ‘gunfight’

Three policemen were injured in the incident

A suspected leader of a robbery ring was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Senbagh upazila of Noakhali district.

The incident occurred at Bircourt area of Kesharpar union around 2:45am on Tuesday.

The deceased is Anwar Hossain alias Yusuf, 44, who was the leader of an inter-district robber gang and accused in 12 criminal cases including seven cases of robbery, police said.

Three policemen - Sub-Inspector (SI) Jasim Uddin, Assistant SI Lokesh Mahajan and Constable Abdur Rahman, were injured in the incident. They have been provided with primary treatment.

Senbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune that acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted a drive at Jamidarhat in Begumganj uapzila on Monday night and arrested Yusuf around 9:30pm.

During the preliminary investigation, Yusuf confessed that they were preparing to commit a robbery that very night. Later, police along with Yusuf conducted another drive around 2:45 am in the area.

When law enforcement arrived there with Yusuf, the other robbers, who were already in waiting, opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back in self-defense and triggering a gunfight.

Yusuf was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries. He was taken to Noakhali General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

One pistol, three bullets, four cartridges, seven bullet shells, three sharp weapons and a gas lighter were recovered from the spot.
