'We had taken permission from the local administration on January 21 to arrange this program'
The local administration in Thakurgaon imposed section 144 on on Thursday in Begunbari union of Sadar upazila after Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Awami Swechchhasebak League initiated two separate programs in the same placeat the same time.
Restricting any kind of political gathering on Thursday, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdullah Al Mamun slapped the ban at Danarhat Eidgah Moidan and its surroundings effective from 1pm and it continued till 12am.
Awami Swechchhasebak League Begunbari unit President Labu said: "We had taken permission from the local administration on January 21 to arrange this program. However BNP called their program at the same time to create confusion."
However, BNP Begunbari unit President SM Abul Kashem Azad said: "On January 16, we submitted a letter to Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police seeking permission to arrange our Begunbari union council. But Awami League called their program to disrupt ours."
Azad also said that they have relocated their council program to Shalerhat Bazar at the same time.
UNO Abdullah Al Mamunsaid:"We have imposed section 144 to avoid any untoward situation in the area."
