Quoting locals, police said the murder took place over a family dispute
A man has killed himself after allegedly murdering four people, including his wife, mother-in-law and two neighbours over a family dispute in Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar district.
The incident took place at their house near Pallatol Tea Garden early Sunday, according to police and locals.
The deceased are Nirmal, the perpetrator, his wife Jolly, mother-in-law Lakshmi, and their neighbours Basanta and her daughter Shiuly.
Law enforcement recovered the bodies and sent them to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, Barlekha police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Yeasinul Haque told Dhaka tribune.
ABM Mahbubur Rahman, manager of Pallatol tea garden, said Nirmal was addicted to drugs.
Quoting locals, police said the murder took place because of a family feud, adding that all four of them, except Nirmal, were tea garden workers.
According to their other neighbours, Nirmal and Jolly got into a fight around 5am and at one point Nirmal began to beat her. When she tried to escape, he started hacking his wife with a sharp weapon.
As Jolly's mother rushed to help her, Nirmal hacked at her as well and injured them both. Then, he slashed their two neighbours with the weapon when they came to stop him from hacking the others.
Following the murders, he went inside the house and hanged himself, the neighbours said.
After being contacted by tea garden authorities and locals, Superintendent of Moulvibazar police Faruk Ahmed and OC Yeasinul Haque immediately went to the spot along with other police officials.
