A woman committed suicide after reportedly being harassed and physically abused in Rajshahi.
The deceased identified as Akhtarunnesa, was mother of a 13-year-old girl, and resident of Borobihanoli union under Bagmara upazila.
On Tuesday, Abdul Majid, member of Borobihanoli union parishad, tied Akhtarunnesa to a tree and physically abused her over a previous dispute between them, said Akhtarunnesa’s brother Saiful Islam.
“Unable to bear the shame and embarrassment, my sister ended her life by ingesting insecticide the next morning,” he added.
She was taken to Bagmara Upazila Health Complex, where she died on Wednesday at 10am. Later, her body was sent to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Bagmara police station OC (Investigation) Mizanur Rahman said: “A case has been filed by the victim’s brother. We are trying to arrest the accused.”
Police detained the accused UP member’s brother Abdul Karim last morning.
When our correspondent spoke to the accused UP member Abdul Majid regarding the incident, he rejected abusing or harassing her. "Akhtarunnesa had been spoiling my vegetable garden over personal grudges against me. As she did the same on Tuesday, I kept her bound to a tree for a while, as punishment.”
