Alleged robber killed in Noakhali 'gunfight'

An alleged ring leader of a robber gang was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Musapur union in Companiganj upazila of Noakhali at 3am on Monday.

The deceased is Shahadat Hossain Swapan alias Swapan Dakat, 39, of Bamni Bazar area of Rampur union.

Six police officers were severely injured during the ordeal.

Police claimed that he was the leader of an inter-district (Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni and Chandpur) robber gang.

Swapan was accused in 23 cases filed with different police stations, informed police. 

Arifur Rahman, Companiganj police station OC, said a team led by Inspector (investigation) Mostafizur Rahman arrested Shahadat from Chowmuhani in Begumganj upazila on Sunday evening.

During the interrogation, he revealed that his gang members would wait at the Chotodhali village to commit robbery at night.

When a police team reached the spot to arrest other members of the gang, the criminals opened fire on police, triggering a gunfight. Police shot 23 rounds of shotgun and pistol bullets in a bid to save themselves.

During the gunfight six policemen namely Companiganj police station Superintendent Anowar, Constable Sharif, Ala Uddin, Khorshed, Arif and DB constable Abdul Malek were injured, OC Rahman said.

They were taken to Companiganj Health Complex.

Shahadat sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter, the OC added.

Later, he was taken to Companiganj Health Complex where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police also recovered a pipe gun, nine rounds of bullet, four sharp weapons, one shovel, one iron rod and one iron handle.
