This happened when a boat hauling tree logs rammed the bridge head on, its middle portion collapsing and plummeting into the river
A 225ft long iron bridge in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi was critically damaged early on Wednesday.
This happened when a boat hauling tree logs rammed the bridge head on, its middle portion collapsing and plummeting into the river.
This unexpected collapse of the bridge on the Shondha River, close to Talukdar Hat in Suktagarh union, has disrupted road communication between Jhalakathi’s Rajapur upazila and Pirojpur’s Kaukhali upazila.
This accident has become a major inconvenience for 5,000-6,000 locals including students of schools, colleges, and madrasas. Local businesses dependent on the easy transportation of goods over this essential bridge are also adversely affected.
Locals say this weathered bridge once before suffered a blow when a sand hauling ship hit it, compromising its structural integrity. When the log hauling boat collided with the bridge, its middle portion collapsed right on top of the boat. However, no casualties or injuries were reported.
Local students say they are now at risk, having to cross the river to get to their classes.
