A 500 metre stretch on the road in front of the government food storehouse and a 25 metre stretch of Miabari road beside the Mara Madhumati River bank have been collapsing gradually and have now reached a critical condition
Two separate stretch of roads, one in front of the government godown area and the other in Miabari area in Gopalganj town have recently collapsed, suddenly putting a number of residential and commercial buildings at risk of casualties.
A 500 metre stretch on the road in front of the government food storehouse and a 25 metre stretch of Miabari road beside the Mara Madhumati River bank have been collapsing gradually and have now reached a critical condition.
Shahnaz Begum, a resident of Miabari area, said: "We are terrified because of the recent collapse of the road just beside our house. We bought the house with our hard-earned savings, what will happen to us if we lose it or it collapses on us."
Al Amin, councillor for Ward no 9 in Gopalganj municipality, said: "Illegal sand lifting from the Mara Madhumati river bank in Miabari area might have resulted in the road to gradually collapse since November 29. Several houses in the area are also in danger of collapsing now."
Md Aminul Islam Barkat, the in-charge of the food godown, said the edges of the road in front of the godown have been collapsing since mid-November.
"Transportation of all sorts of vehicles was cancelled due to the situation. If the road is not repaired soon, the warehouse, which has the capacity to store 3000 tons of food, might shut down. Five buildings of the storehouse are under the threat of collapsing."
Gopalganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Bishwajit Boidda said: "Heavy trucks had been loaded and unloaded on the road by the warehouse, this might be one of the reasons for the road collapse. One other reason might be the dislocation of underground soil due to vibration caused by the piling works at the adjacent municipality market which still in construction."y
"The stretch of road in front of Miabari might have collapsed due to imperfection of construction. I have visited the spot and found no signs of erosion in the Mara Madhumati. However, our team will provide technical assistance to repair the road.”
"A project has already been taken in hand to fix the road near the godown, and we will provide necessary support to fix both of the roads.”
