A man in Rangpur city brutally murdered his pregnant wife and two children on Sunday, and then stabbed himself in the throat in a reported failed attempt to make it look like they were attacked by someone else.
The horrific incident took place in the morning at the couple’s tin-shed home at Kasnar Dola Moholla in the city’s Bahar Kasna area, police and locals said.
Police, however, maintained that the man may have tried to commit suicide after killing his family.
The deceased were identified as Asia Aktar Ratna, 32, her daughter Neha, 2, and eight-month-old son Nishad
Ratna’s husband Abdur Razzak, 38, was arrested by police later. He also confessed to killing the trio during preliminary questioning.
Quoting locals and Ratna’s relatives, Haragach police station OC Nazmul Kader said the couple was having marital disputes for a while over the husband’s continuous demand for dowry.
Following that, Razzak strangled his wife and two children to death Sunday morning. Afterwards, he stabbed his throat with a knife and then started crying for help, saying his family was under attack.
Informed by locals, Rapid Action Battalion and police arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies, said OC Kader. Razzak was also detained over his suspected involvement in the murders. He confessed to police soon after.
Razzak was later taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment in police custody. The bodies were also sent there for autopsies.
Kazi Muttaki Ibnu Minan, deputy commissioner (crime) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, also confirmed that their preliminary investigation found that Razzak strangulated his wife and children.
“Then, he [Razzak] tried to make it look like he was not the killer, by stabbing himself in the throat in an attempt to commit suicide,” Minan said.
He added that proceedings were underway to start a case over the murders.
Ratna's elder brother MM Rashid said their family had given a lot of “gifts” including cash during Ratna's wedding. But Razzak kept demanding more money as dowry.
“We have been meeting his demands to the best of our ability. But Razzak still tortured my sister both physically and mentally," he said.
The grief-stricken family demanded the capital punishment for Razzak.
