Poor visibility is likely to have played a key role in the collision

A man has been was killed and 15 others were injured when two passenger launches collided on the Meghna River in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj.

The accident took place around 1am on Saturday.

The deceased is Md Humayun, 35.

Poor visibility is likely to have played a key role in the collision between Dhaka-bound MV Manik 4 and Chandpur-bound MV Bogdadia 13.

Inspector Md Mostafizur Rahman, in-charge of Kolagachia river police outpost, said the passenger of MV Manik 4 died on the spot.

The injured were taken to various hospitals, including Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), for treatment, whereas the deceased's body has been kept at DMCH morgue.

He said rescue operation has been underway since 6am in the morning.

Meanwhile, a four-member probe committee, headed by Saiful Islam, joint director of BIWTA Naval security and traffic management department, was formed to investigate the matter.

The committee was asked to submit their probe report within three working days, Arif Uddin, joint director of Dhaka River Port, told Dhaka Tribune.
