Asha Khatun was assaulted and forced to ingest poison on September 2 at her in-law's house
Several hundred residents of Gopalnagar village in Pabna's Faridpur upazila took out a procession on Wednesday afternoon demanding justice for the murder of Asha Khatun of the same village, and the removal of the officer-in-charge (OC) who handled the case.
According to the protesters, Asha Khatun was killed because she discovered an extramarital affair between her sister-in-law's (her husband's younger sister) husband, Saiful Islam, and two of her sisters-in-law (her husband's brothers' wives), Anguri and Jahanara Khatun.
Asha Khatun was assaulted and forced to ingest poison on September 2 at her in-law's house.
Learning of the incident, Asha's family went there and took her to Faridpur Upazila Health Complex, finding her on the verge of death.
She was later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) where she died undergoing treatment.
According to Asha's parental family, rather than accepting the case, the police filed two false cases of robbery against Asha's father and sent him to jail when he refused to bribe them.
Out on bail on November 28, Asha's father Jahidul Islam filed a case with the Magistrate Court of Pabna accusing five of the murder.
Judge Md Murad Jahan sent the case to Pabna’s Faridpur police station for investigation but they tried to pass it off as a suicide, said Asha's family.
The agitated protesters are demanding the removal of the OC for his mishandling of the case.
Denying the allegations, Faridpur police station OC Abul Kalam Azad said Asha drank poison of her own accord and died after being taken to RMC.
Asha's family went to file a case with Faridpur police station, but it was not accepted on account of being a case of suicide.
