Teenager burnt over phone dispute in Barisal

A 13-year-old was set on fire by his friends regarding dispute over a mobile phone, in Barisal.

The incident took place at Babugabj upazila on Saturday.

The injured is Md Mahfuz, a seventh grade student of Bakhshir Char Dakhil Madrasa, under Chandpasha union of under Barishal Airport police station.

He was referred to Dhaka for better treatment Sunday afternoon with 20% burn injuries on different parts of his body including his throat, Dr MA Azad, physician of burn and plastic surgery unit Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).

SM Zahid Bin Alam, officer in charge of Airport police station, visited the spot, and no case had been lodged till filing of this report.

Mahfuz’s sister Kulsum Begum said Mahfuz had a dispute over buying a mobile phone (worth Tk600) with his friends.

As he was waiting in front of a grocery shop at Varanikandi area of the village, he was called by his friend Bappi and Tamim.

They engaged in an altercation, and at one point they poured Kerosene over Mahfuz and tried to burn him alive. They then fled the scene.

Locals later rescued Mahfuz and took him to SBMCH Saturday night.
