Suspected robber killed in Comilla 'gunfight'

A suspected robber has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Chandina upazila of Comilla.

The incident happened near Srimontopur border in Tulatuli Koraigach area around 3am on Sunday.

The deceased is Delwar Hossain Delu, 36, son of Abdul Barek Mia from Fatehpur village of the same upazila.

Delwar has seven cases filed against him, including arms and robbery cases.

Chandina police station Sub Inspector (SI) Gias Uddin said: "Acting on a tip-off, our team went to the spot to detain the robbers.

"Sensing our presence, the robbers started firing at us and in defence we fired back too, triggering the gunfight."

Delwar sustained bullet injuries in the gunfight and was rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead, the SI added.

The incident left four policemen injured -- Chandina police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abul Foisal, SI Ahaduzzaman, and two constables Rehan Uddin and Sayem Khan.

Police also recovered a pipe-gun, two rounds of bullets, and some sharp weapons from the spot.
