Two killed in Noakhali, Cox’s Bazar 'gunfight'

In Cox’s Bazar, a man was killed in a gunfight between two rival groups in Teknaf upazila on Thursday

Two men were killed in gunfights in Noakhali and Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf on Thursday.

In Noakhali, a suspected drug trader was killed in a gunfight with Detective Branch (DB) of police in Sadar upazila.

The incident occurred at West Mahduripur area around 3am on Thursday.

The deceased is Ibrahim Khalil alias Bhandari Rubel, 32, of Ayubpur village in Sadar upazila, confirmed Noakhali DB police OC Kamruzzaman Shikdar.

He said Ibrahim was wanted in 16 criminal cases, including robbery, drug and murder cases.

The OC said a team of Noakhali DB police arrested Ibrahim, with 60 yaba pills, from Rail Line area of the upazila on Wednesday night.

Later, they took Ibrahim with them to West Mahduripur village for recovering firearms.

As the police team reached the spot, Ibrahim’s associates opened fire, triggering a gunfight. Ibrahim was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene.

The incident left five policemen injured – OC Kamruzzaman Shikdar, Sub Inspectors (SI) Sayed Mia, Omar Faruk, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) MasudAlam and Constable Delowar Hossain.

In Cox’s Bazar, a man was killed in a gunfight between two rival groups in Teknaf upazila on Thursday.

The deceased is Md Ullah, alias Shona Mia, 35, of Ulchamri area under Hlila union of the upazila.

Teknaf police operation officer Md Rakibul Khan confirmed the matter and said a turf war broke out between two rival gangs around 5:30am yesterday. Hearing the incident, police were deployed to the spot instantly.

After reaching the spot, police rescued a bleeding Md Ullah and rushed him to Teknaf Upazila General Hospital. The duty doctor at the hospital announced him dead on arrival.

Police also recovered a locally made handgun, eight rounds of bullet and 25 bullet casings.

The deceased’s body was kept at the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

A case was filed in Teknaf police station to investigate the matter.
