Suspected drug trader killed in Noakhali 'gunfight'

Police recovered a light gun, a pipe gun, six cartridges and six sharp weapons from the spot.

A suspected drug trader has been killed in a gunfight with Detective Branch (DB) of police in Noakhali Sadar upazila.

The incident occurred at West Mahduripur area around 3am on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Khalil alias Bhandari Rubel, 32, son of Abul Kashem Bhandari of Ayubpur village in Sadar upazila.

Noakhali DB police Officer-in-Charge (OC)Kamruzzaman Shikdar said Ibrahim was wanted in 16 criminal cases, including robbery, drug and murder cases.

The OC said a team of Noakhali DB police arrested Ibrahim, with 60 yaba pills, from Rail Line area of the upazila on Wednesday night.

Later, they took Ibrahim with them to West Mahduripur village for recovering firearms.

As the police team reached the spot, Ibrahim’s associates opened fire, triggering a gunfight. Ibrahim was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene.

The incident left five policemen injured -- OC Kamruzzaman Shikdar, Sub Inspectors (SI) Sayed Mia, Omar Faruk, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Masud Alam and constable Delowar Hossain.   

The body was recovered and sent to Noakhali General Hospital, where the injured were also admitted.
