CCTV footage captures brutal murder

A mentally challenged college student was reportedly killed at drug rehabilitation center Somorpon in Kushtia's Mirpur upazila.

The deceased was identified as Kamruzzaman Emon, a first year honours student at Rajshahi City College.

There was an uproar after the CCTV footage of the student being tortured went viral on social media, Tuesday morning.

Employees of the rehabilitation center claimed that Emon died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

However, it was clearly visible in the CCTV footage that several men were beating him after tying him up and an injection was pushed into him.

According to Ejajul Azim Ripon, the deceased's father, doctors said Emon became mentally challenged due to lack of sleep and excessive mobile use.

"Emon was taken to a mental hospital but the doctors there told us to return after a few days," he said.

"I admitted Emon to a non government drug rehabilitation center called Somorpon without giving it a second thought when he started a commotion after returning home that day"

Emon never took any drugs, added Ejajul.

When asked why he admitted his son to a drug rehabilitation center even though he was mentally challenged, the victim's father said: "I don't comprehend how this happened."

He confirmed that he would not file any case in this connection saying it was a decree of fate.

The deceased's mother Kamrunnahar charged that Emon was tortured to death as he was fine when they left him at the rehabilitation center.

According to Rubel, one of the reported torturers, Emon was sometimes tied up and slapped to prevent indiscipline.

Supervisor of the rehabilitation center, Habib Uddin, said Emon died after suffering a cardiac arrest, not from torture.

Mirpur Upazila Health Officer Selim Uddin Faraji said there were bruises on Emon's body but the cause of death cannot be confirmed before the autopsy.

Mirpur police station OC Abul Kalam did not agree to comment regarding this incident.
