All vehicles on the Madan-Khaliajuri road came to a halt after the deck of the bailey bridge connecting Netrokona and Madan collapsed Monday night.

The collapse of the bridge built over the river Bairahala has caused immense distress to countless people of Madan, Khaliajuri, Atpara, Mohongonj, and Itna, as it is the only route connecting them to the city district.

Freedom fighter Md Habibur Rahman, chairman of Madan upazila, said a proposal was raised in the district coordination meeting held in October to build a new concrete bridge, demolishing the current one, as it often collapses due to its being old.

Netrokona Roads and Highways Department Work-Assistant, Md Mohon Uddin Talukder, said the transoms (horizontal structural beams of a bridge) of the bridge collapse whenever heavy vehicles pass over it.

Repair work on the bridge is currently ongoing, he added.

Netrokona Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Md Didarul Alam Tarafder was not available for comment.
