Police apprehended Abdus Salam, member of Kajalshah Union Parishad, on Thursday evening

Police have detained a union parishad (UP) member in the Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet on allegations of torturing a man in arbitration.

Police apprehended Abdus Salam, member of Kajalshah Union Parishad, on Thursday evening after his video of beating up the victim, Gias Uddin, 35, went viral and drew flak on social media.

Zakiganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Md Abdun Naser said they detained Salam in the bordering area of Karaballa in Kanaighat while he was trying to escape to India.

Police also detained three more people in connection with the incident, the OC said.

The detainees are -- Ebadur Rahman, a UP member, Shahjahan, and Anwar.

Victim Gias Uddin, a resident of Barobond village, was asked to file a written complaint over the matter though the incident occurred three months ago, he said.

In the video clip, Gias is seen hanging from a bamboo with his hands and legs tied while Salam is beating up with a cane in front of villagers gathered around the spot.

Locals said Salam is involved in politics with BNP while the party's Zakiganj upazila unit former general secretary Shafiqur Rahman denied the claim.

"Salam has no affiliation with BNP and its politics," he added.
