The report stated that the signal was green, which prompted the train to enter the switch track instead of the main track
Defective and outdated signaling system was the main reason behind the derailment of Rangpur Express in Ullapara upazila, Sirajganj on November 14, according to a probe report.
Md Firoj Mahmud, additional deputy commissioner of Sirajganj and head of the probe committee, submitted the report to Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner Dr Faruk Ahmmad on Thursday.
According to the report, the stock rail line or the main railway line and the tongue rail line – the railroad switch – were supposed to be in a locked formation, but there was a gap between the two lines which caused the train to derail.
The report also stated that the signal was green, which prompted the train to enter the switch track instead of the main track.
The investigation report strongly recommended that the signaling system, which was last updated in 2003, be modernized to avoid future accidents.
On November 14, the engine and seven bogies of Rangpur Express derailed as soon as the train left Ullapara rail station. The engine and four bogies also caught fire.
Around 25 people were injured in the incident, following which the district administration formed the probe body with the additional deputy commissioner as its head.
Three other probe committees were formed by the Ministry of Railways, Pakshi Divisional railway station, and Rajshahi Western Rail Division to look into the incident. They have yet to file their reports.
