'Like developed countries, we are formulating rules on spreading misleading information through social media'

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has said the government is formulating rules to take punitive measures against service providers for spreading misleading information.

“Like developed countries, we are formulating rules on spreading misleading information through social media,” he told a roundtable at Chittagong circuit house conference hall, marking the World Television Day, on Friday.

BTV Chittagong centre, Chittagong Television Journalists Association and TV Camera Journalists Association jointly organised the roundtable. BTV Chittagong centre General Manager Nitai Kumar Bhattacharya presidmined over the roundtable.

Terming the spread of false and fabricated information on social media as the biggest problem worldwide, the information minister said: “We have already formulated broadcast policy. We will enact broadcast act. This law will give legal protection to journalists of electronic media.”

“Chittagong centre of BTV will telecast programmes 12 hours in a day from next month. At present, BTV is being broadcasted as cable TV in Chittagong,” he disclosed.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave approval for private TV channels for the first time, Hasan added: “At present, there are 34 private channels in the country. Eleven more private TV channels will go for broadcasting in the country.”

The information minister said nearly one lakh people are directly and indirectly involved in the television sector.

Alongside cultural development, television sector has to contribute to nation building activities, he added.

City Mayor AJM Nasiruddin, Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mannan, BTV Deputy Director General (News) Anup Kumar Kashtogir, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalist Vice President Reaj Haider Chowdhury, Chittagong Press Club General Secretary Chowdhury Farid, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Bureau Chief Kalim Sarwar, Ekushey Patrika Editor Azad Talukdar, TV Camera Journalists Association President Shafique Ahmed Sajib and Chittagong TV journalist Association (CTJA) General Secretary Latia Ansari Runa, among others, addressed the roundtable.
