The administration imposed the Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) from 6am on Thursday to 7pm Saturday

The district administration of Tangail on Thursday prohibited all types of public gatherings in parts of the town for three days, fearing violence, after two rival factions of Awami League’s district unit announced conflicting programs.

The administration imposed the Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) from 6am on Thursday to 7pm Saturday.

Explaining the reason behind the step, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mosharaf Hossain Khan said: “The counter programs may lead to disorder in the town.”

The district’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjit Kumar Roy said: "We advised the district administration to ban public gatherings in order to maintain law and order."

Additional police personnel were deployed to important locations to avoid any untoward incidents, added Additional SP Asaduzzaman Mia.

on Thursday was the 16th death anniversary of Aminur Rahman Khan Bappi, the former joint secretary of Bangladesh Chatra League’s Tangail district unit, who was killed in an attack near his house on November 21, 2003.

He was the son of Tangail 3 MP Ataur Rahman Khan and elder brother of former MP of the same seat Amanur Rahman Khan Rana.

The family and their followers had planned various programs, under the banner of "Shaheed Aminur Rahman Khan Bappi Smrity Sangsad," for on Thursday and Friday to mark the death anniversary.

On the other hand, another faction of the ruling party’s district unit, announced counter programs under the banner of “Oppressed Awami Family” — claiming the Khan family was gathering criminals in the name of observing Bappi's death anniversary.

This faction is led by Tangail 2 lawmaker Tanvir Hasan Chhoto Monir, his brother and Vice-President of the party’s Tangail town unit Golam Kibria Boro Monir, and Jamilul Rahman Miron, organizing secretary of the party’s district unit.

The administrative action was taken after two groups of local Awami League called meeting and program at the same venue at the same time.
