The workers vowed to continue with the protests until the law is repealed
Police have dispersed protesting transport workers who kept the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway blocked for two and a half hours.
“The protestors have been dispersed from the highway. The traffic flow has returned to normal,” said Mawna Highway Police Sub-Inspector (SI) MA Hashem on Tuesday afternoon.
The blockade caused immense sufferings to commuters on the highway.
Earlier at 8am, the protesters put up a barricade at the Mawna intersection along the highway in Sreepur Upazila, demanded for the cancellation of new road transport law.
The workers vowed to continue with the protests until the law is repealed.
Abdul Rahim, driver of the Takwa transport at Mawna intersection in Sreepur, said the government had given us a light driving license.
He said: "At present we have to use a heavy driving license. Otherwise, they will fine us Tk15,000 to Tk20,000. If the government had told us this before, we would have availed the heavy driving license."
