Five Chhatra League men, accused in a case filed in connection with throwing Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute’s principal into a pond on the campus, were arrested early on Tuesday.
The arrested are Kamal Hossain Sourav, 24, Sabbir Ahmed Shanto, 22, Salman Tony, 22, Rayhanul Islam Hasib, 21, and Murad Hossain, 19.
They are the students of different departments of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute and activists of Chhatra League.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Golam Ruhul Kuddus said: " They were arrested from Rajshahi's Belpukur and Sirajganj's Hatikumrul area."
"The arrested were among the prime accused in the charge sheet of the case, " he added.
They were produced before the court in the afternoon and police will file a plea to hold them in remand, added the ADC.
Previously, a group of ‘BCL activists’ threw Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute Principal Farid Uddin Ahmed into the pond on the Institute campus on November 2 in reprisal for his refusal to allow two students, including joint general secretary of the Institute unit of the BCL Kamal Hossain Sourav, to fill in forms for examination, due to inadequate class attendance.
CCTV footage shows at least 10 youths dragging the teacher by his hands and neck and then throwing him into the water body.
The principal filed a case against 50 people with Chandrima police station in this connection that night.
With the five arrested on Monday, 18 people have been arrested in this connection so far.
