Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Mayor Ariful Haq Chowdhury stood in line for two hours to buy onions at Tk45 per kg.

Onions at that rate were sold by Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) around 12 noon on Monday.

Mayor Ariful Haq Chowdhury could only buy 1kg of onions around 2:30 pm after standing in line for two hours.

He said: "At the moment, onion prices are beyond the reach of normal people. People are unsettled by onion prices. Even I do not have onion at home right now. This is the reason why I stood at Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) line to buy onions."

"I will be able to use 1kg of onions for 15 days," he added.

Rab had confiscated 7 tonnes of onions coming through illegal routes from India. The onions were handed over to Shahporan police station. Later, a court directed selling of the onions by Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).

Meanwhile, onions were sold at Kobi Nazrul Auditorium area, Keen bridge area, and Bongobir road in three trucks around 10 am on Monday.

Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) Sylhet In-Charge Md Ismail Mazumder said the recovered onions were sold at government monitored prices at three points from three trucks.

"Onions will be sold until stocks last," he said.

Shahporan police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Kayyum Chowdhury said one truckload onions were supposed to be auctioned off, but that did not happen. Instead, it was decided that the onions will be sold at the government monitored prices at the three points.
