Chhatra League man beat a third year student allegedly for stealing a laptop
Students of Rajshahi University blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway Saturday morning, hours after some Chhatra League activists of the university unit allegedly beat up one of their fellows at a dormitory.
Victim Sohrab Mia, a third-year student of Department of Finance and Banking, suffered injuries to his head, and was undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
Sohrab, a resident of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall, received 15 stitches to his head.
Asif Lak of Islamic Studies department, and Humayun Kabir Nahid of Bangla department took Sohrab to room no 254 of the hall around 12:30am for grilling over a stolen laptop, according to campus sources.
Both Nahid, and Asif are fourth-year students of the university, and followers of Golam Kibria, Chhatra League president of the university unit.
Three days back, Asif's laptop was stolen from his room, they said.
Talking to the correspondent Tonoy, a classmate of the victim, said Asif had slapped Sohrab three days ago claiming that he stole Asif’s laptop.
“Following the incident, Asif and Nahid took Sohrab to that room Friday night. Then, they locked the room, and Nahid started beating Sohrab with an iron rod,” he said.
Asif also hit Sohrab on his head with a piece of wood continuously, Tonoy said quoting the victim.
After receiving information about the attack, friends of the victim rescued him, and took him to the university medical centre. They later admitted him to RMCH.
When the news spread among the fellows, protesting students brought out a rally on the campus in the morning, and later staged demonstrations on the Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway, triggering long tailbacks on both sides of the road.
Students halt protest till Nov 17
Protesting students halted their protest till November 17 to allow the university authorities to meet their three-point demand.
The three-point demands are: legal actions against, and expulsion of Asif Lak, Humayun Kabir Nahid, and all others involved in the assault of their fellow student; resignation of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall provost, and university authority to bear medical expenses of assaulted student Sohrab Mia.
