They brought out a procession on the campus around 11am
Students of Rajshahi University have blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of their university, protesting an alleged assault on a fellow student by Chhatra League activists.
The protesters brought out a procession on the campus around 11am on Saturday and later took position on the highway, triggering long tailbacks on both sides of the highway.
They were also chanting slogans demanding expulsion of two Chhatra League activists – Asif Lak and Humayun Kabir Nahid – who allegedly beat up their fellow student, Sohrab Mia, early Saturday.
Sohrab, a third year student of Department of Finance and Banking, is now undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) for injuries to his head, hands, and legs.
Asif and Humayun are the followers of the university unit Chhatra League President Golam Kibria.
Campus sources said a group of Chhatra League men, led by Asif, took Sohrab, a resident of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall, to room no 254 around 12:30am.
Asif and Humayun questioned Sohrab over various matters and beat up him with iron rods.
After receiving information about the attack, friends of the victim rescued him and took him to the university medical centre; they later admitted him to RMCH.
Tonoy, a classmate of the victim, said Asif also slapped Sohrab two days ago and asked him to recover a laptop which was stolen from the hall's room no 258.
When contacted, Asif denied the allegation of assaulting Sohrab.
The university Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman said they are looking into the matter.
