Onions have seen a price hike in recent times
A journalist and two policemen have been injured in an attack allegedly by some businessmen after a mobile court fined two of them for selling onion at excessively high price.
The incident took place at Nicher Bazar wholesale market in the town on Saturday.
Executive magistrate Sibbir Ahmed and Amjad Hossain conducted the drive at the wholesale market.
“Evidence of selling onion at a higher price as well as goods without displaying the price list was found against the traders. Nafisa Traders was fined Tk20,000 and Jahangir Traders was slapped with a Tk10,000 fine during the drive,” Sibbir Ahmed said.
Witnesses said the businessmen got furious after they were fined and confined the two executive magistrates.
When the members of police tried to intervene, they were assaulted while a local journalist was attacked by the businessmen when he tried to take a picture of the incident.
Later additional police rescued the magistrates and those who participated in the drive.
SM Shafayet, the injured journalist, was admitted to the Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.
Expressing his disappointment at the incident that occurred while monitoring the market, Nazrul Islam Sarker, deputy commissioner of Chuadanga, said legal action will be taken in this regard.
Terming the incident unwanted Chuadanga Shop Owners Association General Secretary Ibrul Hasan Joardar Ibu said the situation was created due to a misunderstanding.
