A soil-laden truck broke down at the Murapara level crossing
Chittagong-bound train "Chhattala Express" avoided an accident in Murapara area at Comilla Sadar upazila.
A soil-laden truck broke down at the Murapara level crossing around 5pm on Thursday.
The train, coming from Dhaka, applied emergency brake and managed to stop before crashing into the truck, after the level crossing’s gateman Md Tipu moved ahead on the tracks and signaled it with a red flag.
Comilla railway division acting Assistant Engineer Ram Narayan Dhar said railway communications on the route resumed over an hour later, after the truck was removed from the tracks.
Earlier, eight bogies of "Rangpur Express" train had derailed, among which two caught fire in Ullapara of Sirajganj.
The accident occurred just after the Rangpur-bound train, coming from Dhaka, left the platform of the Ullapara rail station around 1:30pm Thursday, assistant Station Master of Ullapara rail station Rafiqul Islam told Dhaka Tribune.
Although nearly 20 people were injured, no one has died, the assistant station master added.
