Man held with 8 gold bars in Benapole

Another woman was similarly detained with 6 gold bars in Jessore

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained a man with eight gold bars, worth Tk43.2 lakhs, in Benapole border area under Sharsha upazila of Jessore.

The detained is Rabiul Islam Jamil, 35, was arrested at Amrakhali BGB check-post around 8am on Wednesday.

BGB 49 Commanding Officer (CO) Lt Col Md Selim Reza said: “Acting on a tip-off about huge amounts of gold being smuggled in an India-bound Mahindra vehicle, a team of BGB members, led by Habildar Shafiqul Islam, took position at Amrakhali check-post and stopped the vehicle.”

Later, after searching Rabiul onboard the vehicle, BGB members found eight gold bars concealed in his waist belt.

He will be sent to Benapole port police station after primary interrogation, Selim added.

In a separate incident but similar, BGB 21 detained a woman with six gold bars, worth Tk33.6 lakh in Jessore on Wednesday.

The detained Monira Khatun, 35, was apprehended with the gold bars weighing 700 grams at Daulatpur upazila.

Monira was detained during a Bangladesh Outpost (BOP) patrol at Daulatpur around 9:15 am, confirmed BGB 21 Company Commander Md Monjur Elahi in a press release on Wednesday.
