Brahmanbaria (Sadar Circle) ASP Rezaul Kabir confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said: “We received reports about multiple incidents of robbery in several households in Ashuganj and Jatrapur area, and also on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. Hence, members of the police force remained vigilant.

“Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area when the robbers were preparing to rob a home in Chapairpur village.

“Sensing the presence of law enforcement, the miscreants opened fire. This caused us to fire in retaliation, triggering a gunfight,” ASP Rezaul added.

One unidentified suspect was shot during the gunfight, while police caught three of his associates. Meanwhile, ASP Alamgir fell down a ditch to take cover during the exchange of fire, and got injured.

The injured died on the spot due to excessive bleeding caused by bullet wounds. Later, the body was taken to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The suspects were members of an inter-district robbers’ gang, said the ASP.

A case will be filed in connection with the matter.
