A visually-impaired student of Chittagong University (CU) has been allegedly assaulted by an activist of the university’s Chhatra League unit, over a trifle matter.

Shukkur Alam, a student of the university’s Philosophy Department, was physically assaulted Morshedul Alam Rifat, student of Management Department and also a member of CU Chhatra League's “Bijoy” group, in front of Suhrawardy Hall on Sunday.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Shukkur said Rifat started to beat him after he mistakenly bumped into him when both were coming out of the dinner room in front of Suhrawardy Hall around 8pm.

Shukkur was also injured in his eye from the assault and given primary treatment for his eye injury at CU medical centre.

Despite several attempts, Rifat could not be reached over the phone for his comment over the incident.

However, Bijoy group leader SM Jahedul Awal and also the former finance secretary of CU Chhatra League said: "We do not know what actually happened, and if evidence is found against Rifat, then we will take step against him".

CU Assistant Proctor Hanif Miah said: “This is very inhuman and we will take action if the victim submits a written complaint.”

CU medical center officer Subhasish Chowdhury said: We gave Shukkur primary treatment and pain killer for his eye injury.

Meanwhile, Disable Students Society of Chittagong University (DISSCU) staged demonstration in front of Suhrawardy Hall and declared 24 hour ultimatum to arrest the accused.

Later, they called off the demonstration after the university proctorial body assured them of taking action regarding the incident.
