Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday arrested three men in connection to the murder of a woman, and the brutal assault of her husband in Gazipur.
The arrested were identified as Hossain alias Apon, 19, the deceased’s nephew, and his associates Emon Raihan, 18, and Rifat, 19.
RAB 1 Company Commander (Porabari Camp) Lt Cdr Abdullah Al Mamun said: "Acting on a tip-off, we arrested Rifat from Dhaka’s Ashulia. Then, based on his information, we arrested the other two from Magura on Friday night."
During interrogation, the trio disclosed detailed description of their plan to kill Apon's uncle, aunt, cousin, and the cousin's wife in order to loot them of their valuables, he added.
According to their statements, on November 2, Apon, with a plan to kill his uncle and aunt visited their residence at Bilashpur area in Gazipur Sadar.
On November 3, they killed Rina Akter, 45, by stringing her up by the neck. As Apon's uncle, Siddik Bepari, 50, witnessed the incident, they viciously assaulted him with sharp weapons in various parts of the body, and left him on the floor, thinking that he was dead. They then raided their locker, and made away with Tk30 lakh, and a large amount of gold jewellery.
Later, when they attempted to murder Apon's cousin Delowar, Apon's uncle who was in fact alive, though severely wounded, managed to scream for help. As the neighbours arrived, Apon and his accomplices fled the scene in a hurry.
During the interrogation, Apon also disclosed his, and his accomplices' plan to buy a flat, a gun, and a motorcycle with the robbed money.
Injured Siddik Bepari is now receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Lake View Hospital in Uttara.
