Chhatra League central committee acting general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee confirmed the matter on Thursday

The general secretary of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit Chhatra League SM Abu Sufian Chanchal has stepped down from his post.

Chhatra League central committee acting general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee confirmed the matter on Thursday.

The resignation comes at a time when hundreds of protesters, including students and teachers of the university, are staging demonstration defying ban on the campus demanding the resignation of vice chancellor on allegation of corruption.

Lekhak Bhattacharjee said: "Chanchal submitted his resignation letter to the central Chhatra League's office on Wednesday. The decision over the resignation letter is still pending."

Bhattacharjee, however, refused to disclose the reasons of Chanchal's resignation.

Central Chhatra League Office Secretary Ahsan Habib said:"I have not read the resignation letter. It was handed over to the acting president, the general secretary.

"He may have resigned for personal reasons. If a decision on resignation is made, it will be communicated in the form of a press release," he added

Dhaka Tribune tried to contact Chanchal for his comment on resignation, but his mobile phone was found switched off.

Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit Chhatra League President Md Jewel Rana said: "I still do not know anything about it. Even, the Central Chhatra League did not tell me anything."

The students at JU have been demonstrating on campus since August 23, demanding the removal of VC Farzana for her alleged involvement in misappropriation of around Tk1.6 crore from a Tk1,445-crore development project, in collusion with Chhatra League’s central and university unit leaders.

It is alleged that Jewel was given Tk50 lakh, Chanchal Tk25 lakh, JU unit Joint Secretary Saddam Hossain and Vice-President Niamul Hassan Tk25 lakh, and Chhatra League central committee Tk1 crore.

Jewel and Chanchal had denied the allegations at the time.
