Several madrasa teachers together, have reportedly beaten a student to death for allegedly stealing money from a teacher’s table in Madaripur Sadar upazila.
The deceased, Hasif Matubbor, 10, was a second grader at Gacchbaria Jamia Karimia Madrasa in Pearpur union. He died undergoing treatment at Madaripur Sadar Hospital around 6:30pm on Wednesday.
Police arrested a madrasa teacher, Md Abul Hasan Khan, in connection with the murder.
According to Hasif’s father Anowar Matubbor, madrasa teacher Md Yousuf Molla accused Hasif of stealing Tk500 and beat him with a cane. Afterwards, several other teachers also did the same. When Hasif fell sick, the madrasa teachers poisoned him to frame the murder as a suicide. Later, they took him to Madaripur Sadar Hospital.
"Madrasa teachers have beaten my son to death for stealing Tk500 only. They tried to frame his murder as a suicide by poisoning him with insecticides. I demand justice," he added.
Md Yousuf Ali Molla, the first of the teachers to beat Hasif, said: "I beat Hasif a little for stealing money from my table. But I don't know anything about second instance of beating in the afternoon as I was not present in the Madrasa then."
Akhil Sarkar, emergency ward doctor at Madaripur Sadar Hospital, said: "A boy was admitted to the hospital reportedly after he attempted to commit suicide. The boy died while receiving treatment. We can confirm the cause of his death after an autopsy."
Madaripur Sadar Model police station OC Swagatul Alam said: "We have arrested a madrasa teacher in connection with the murder of second grader Hasif. We have also sent further police support to the crime scene for further investigation."
