A woman was brutally tortured by her husband, who kidnapped her looking to extort a large sum of ransom in Nabinagar of Manikganj.

The victim, Kamrunnahar Shetu, lawyer of the Manikganj Judge Court, is currently undergoing treatment at the Manikganj 250 Bed District Hospital.

According to the victim’s statement, she was married to the accused Md Shaon Miya in secrecy on September 9.

On October 17, Shaon kidnapped her from the court and took her to a six-storey building in the Nabinagar area. There Shaon tortured her for 15 days straight to extort money from her.

Kamrunnahar gave him a total of Tk16 lakh, but when she was unable to meet Shaon's increasing demand, the tortures began. He videotaped her naked and threatened to share it on the internet. Shaon also viciously attacked her with the pestle of mortar and pestle, hoping that no signs of attack would appear.

On Sunday, Shaon took her to a hospital in Dhaka and planned to kill her there. When Shaon started hitting her, the hospital administration called the police. Shaon fled the hospital and Kamrunnesa went to a relative's house in Uttara for safety.

On Monday, Kamrunnahar went to the Manikganj Sadar police station and gave the horrific description of abuse.

Kamrunnahar's father Md Safiuddin said Shaon had demanded Tk5 lakh as ransom and threatened to kill his daughter following the kidnapping.

He later filed a case against Shaon with Manikganj police station on Sunday.

Manikganj Sadar police station OC Md Hanif Sarkar said: "The victim gave her statement to a Manikganj court magistrate on Tuesday afternoon. She is currently receiving treatment at the Manikganj 250 Bed District Hospital."

The accused Shaon was unavailable for comment as this correspondent found his phone switched off.
